It depends on the child, and how it was handled. It can be a positive thing, in that it teaches them the fragility of life, how everything can change in an instant. It can give a child closure.
I remember being 3 or 4 when my Paternal Grandmother Passed, and being enraged that I wasn't allowed to say goodbye. I think it would have been much less traumatic if I had been allowed to attend her funeral.
