Love the post Terry. How do I get ANYONE to check the archives of the Democrat conventions? If one checks, there is a picture circa 1934 of the Klu Klux Klan, in total regalia, attending one such convention. Perhaps that would be enough to change to dialogue. After all, we know many democrats were slave Barons. I am at a loss to bring attention to this. Why are all these Republican reps of the people so hard to access?
The challenge is, there have been different "Democratic Parties" over the years, just as there have been different "Republican Parties".
For example, we tend to like Abraham Lincoln (with misgivings about that Suspend Habeas thing) but then there's Teddy Roosevelt who was a strong proponent of Eugenics. And "The Big Stick", a reverse Robin Hood. 1920 brought Warren Harding, who was up to his ears in oil money/corruption. I Like Ike? Sorta, but he turned Iran into a brutal police state under the Shah for 25 years, and let the Dulles Brothers do all sorts of nasty things around the globe. If Ike hadn't picked Allen Dulles to head the CIA, would the powers-that-be have been able to pull off the overthrow and murder of JFK? Tricky Dick, ah there's a complex character. But I never could get past his invasion of Cambodia that brought about Pol Pot, expanding the Vietnam War into Laos, and what he did to North Vietnam and Chile.
George HW Bush, George W. Bush. I shouldn't need to elaborate on those two. Likewise John McCain (2008) and Mittens Romney (2012). Rather like a fixed prizefight, returning the favor the Democrats did in 2000 and 2004 for Bu$h.
The Democrats have had their positive times, altho one could put a fork in that part of the party today. FDR, JFK, RFK, Walter Mondale. Paul Wellstone who was assassinated for daring to oppose the invasion of Iraq and who was getting others to join him in the Senate. Altho after changing positions and coming out in favor of Obamacare and with that died the opposition to it, Dennis Kucinich has backed away from who he used to be, but I still remember the good he sought (such as introducing Articles Of Impeachment against Bu$h The Lesser).
I often give the example of JFK. Who's the closest to JFK in the US Senate today? Rand Paul.
What's the "Republican Party" today? Trump gets the headlines, says the right stuff, but Lindsey Graham, Lizard & Dick Cheney, the Bu$hies of course, are still "Republicans". And many more where they slither.
So I tend to stay away from the political party labels. There's no straight line. Certainly the Democrats have gone full-police state, full Death Cult, but look how much trouble Trump had with the “Republicans” during his first four years.
Those at the top own plenty of politicians, so they can always move the actors around on the stage. Or put another way, much of it is controlling both sides, political parties and acceptable/limits of debate.
Rather than labels, I prefer to focus more on issues. In 2024 it's still basically living in a neighborhood of Crips vs. Bloods, and hoping that Trump, who really isn't a member of either gang but had to pick the lesser of evils “party”, is the real deal and can somehow pull things off.
