Resisting The AI Bots
In an interesting twist, the New York Times has Filed a lawsuit to prevent AI from destroying it via grabbing and regurgitating its information, writing styles, and more.
Whether the NYT lawsuit is real, or just another example of a lawsuit being Filed with the true goal of getting a bad decision that will harm the real targets (eg the Wayback Machine), remains to be seen. It will be interesting to see, for example, how many "Friend Of The Court" Briefs are Filed, and whether others join the lawsuit or File their own.
For those writing on Substack, Substack has a helpful article on how to ask the AI bots to not take your content. Of course, that only works if the AI bots respect that request.
Hopefully, other platforms will come up with their own approaches beyond flipping a switch and meekly saying “please”. Which probably won't be simple or easy—most of us find it useful to have our output included in search engines (“good bots”), but don't want it used to create our AI replacements (“bad bots”).
How can I block AI from using my Substack publication to train their models?
