It used to be that newspapers and magazines relied upon paid subscribers and small business advertisers to stay in business. So there was incentive to not offend those paying audiences.

Look at how many small local businesses have been destroyed by the CV1984 operation, how much local advertising has dried up/disappeared, and yet the ostensibly local media organizations somehow magically stay in business. It would be illuminating to "follow the money".
